Shelf tag sizes and which label sheets to use

There is no single “shelf tag size”. Measure the space where the tag goes (the shelf edge, a price channel or a peg hook), then pick the label sheet that fits. Here is every sheet the tools on this site print on.

Quick picks

• Small price stickers on a shelf edge or product: Avery 5160 (2⅝ × 1 in, 30 per sheet). The most common label sheet, easy to find.
• Wider shelf-edge tags with room for a unit price and barcode: Avery 5161 (4 × 1 in, 20 per sheet), or plain paper strips 4 × 1.25 in (16 per sheet) that you cut and slide into a channel or tape on.
• Barcode-only stickers: Avery 5160 for full-size UPC-A; Avery 5167 (1¾ × ½ in, 80 per sheet) only for very small stickers. The bars are short and may not scan on every scanner.
• Shelf channels and holders: Uline sells perforated insert cards for its wire-shelf label holders (3 × 1¼ in, 16 per sheet, and 6 × 1¼ in, 8 per sheet) and price tag insert cards for gondola price tag holders (2 × 1¼ in, 32 per sheet). For peel-and-stick strips, OnlineLabels OL1367 (4 × 1.25 in, 14 per sheet) and Avery 6879 (3¾ × 1¼ in, 12 per sheet) are shelf-strip sized.
• UPC barcode labels: OnlineLabels OL5125 (2 × 1 in, 40 per sheet) or OL1000 (1.5 × 1 in, 50 per sheet).
• Tiny price stickers: square 1 × 1 in labels (Avery Presta 94103, 48 per sheet, or Uline S-10433, 80 per sheet) or ¾ × ¾ in (Avery Presta 94102, 80 per sheet). These are too small for a barcode, so the tools print the price only.
• Round sale stickers: Avery 22807 (2 in round, 12 per sheet), Avery 5294 or 22830 (2½ in round), OnlineLabels OL5375 (2 in, 20 per sheet) or OL2088 (1½ in, 30 per sheet). Text stays inside the circle, so round stickers suit a price or a short deal (“2 for $5”) more than a long name.
• Hang tags: Avery 22802 printable tags with strings (2 × 3½ in, 8 per sheet). The tools keep the text away from the string hole.
• Label printer (DYMO, Zebra, Brother, Rollo): pick a “Thermal roll” size below. See thermal roll labels.
• Sale tags: Avery 5163 (4 × 2 in) or 5164 (4 × 3⅓ in). For signs, use half-page (8.5 × 5.5 in) or full-page paper signs.

All supported sheets

Measurements are in inches, taken from the label makers’ own published templates (Avery PDF templates, Uline Word and PDF templates, OnlineLabels template pages, and the DYMO, Zebra, Brother and Rollo documents above for thermal rolls, checked October 2026). Click a layout name to open the shelf tag maker with that layout selected. “Margin” is the distance from the paper edge to the first label. Sheets are grouped the same way as in the tools’ “Label sheet / paper” menu.

Thermal roll labels (DYMO, Zebra, Brother, Rollo)

Label printers print one label at a time from a roll, so the tools print one label per page and set the page size to the label size. To print:

1. Pick the roll size in “Label sheet / paper” (they are under “Thermal roll labels”). The size list says which DYMO, Zebra, Brother or Rollo rolls each size is compatible with.
2. In the print dialog, choose the label printer and set the paper size in the printer driver to the label (for DYMO, the label name such as “30334 Medium”; for Zebra and Rollo, the label size in the driver’s preferences).
3. Scale 100% / Actual size and Margins None. Turn off “Fit to page”.
4. If the print comes out sideways, switch the orientation (Portrait / Landscape) in the dialog. Print one label first to check.

Direct thermal printers print black only; the “Black & white” style looks best. Roll sizes come from DYMO’s LabelWriter compatibility charts, Zebra’s ZipShip supplies catalog, Brother’s DK die-cut label sheet and Rollo’s label product page (links in the layout data). We have not tested every printer model, so print one label before a full run.

Price gun labels (reference only)

Price guns use their own label rolls, which office and thermal printers can’t print on, so there is no print layout for them. For reference, Avery Dennison lists the Monarch 1131 labeler’s labels as 0.78 in wide × 0.44 in high (Avery Dennison product page). If you want a printed tag that size, the nearest sheet above is Avery 5167 (1¾ × ½ in).

Sheets we did not add (yet)

• Sheets that are not letter size (Avery 4 × 6 in sheets, Herma and other A4 sheets): the tools print on US letter only.
• Labels with no official template or with a layout we could not measure reliably (some Avery round and shaped sheets, Maco and Staples sheets, Garvey price gun labels): we only add sheets with measurements from the maker.
• DYMO price tag labels with a “rat tail” (30373, 30299) and continuous-length rolls (Brother DK-2205): the shape or length isn’t fixed, so a one-label-per-page layout can’t line up.

Label sheets vs. plain paper

• Label sheets are peel-and-stick. They save cutting, but the tags only fit if the printer lines them up. Print a test page first.
• Perforated insert cards (Uline insert cards above) are card stock with no adhesive. Print, tear along the perforations and slide the cards into the holder.
• Plain paper or cardstock (“cut sheets” above) cost less. The tools can print dashed cut lines. Slide the strips into shelf channels or tape them on.
• Laser and inkjet sheets usually have different product numbers (for example 5160 for laser and 8160 for inkjet) but the same layout. Use the sheet made for your printer type.

Same layout, different number

Many label packs list compatible template numbers on the box. Check the label size and number per sheet: if they match one of the rows above, pick that row. Where we downloaded another product’s template and found the same measurements, the table lists it under “Same layout” (for example Avery 5260, 18160 and 5520 match Avery 5160). Products not listed there were not checked.

Avery, Uline, OnlineLabels, DYMO, Zebra, Brother, Rollo and Monarch product names and numbers are used only to say which labels the layouts are compatible with. This site is not affiliated with these companies.
